Project Brief

This is a set for a play taking place in a lively pub in 1889. A Northern play with no half measures.
I constructed the entire traditional English pub according to the designer model and my own references researches. It is made entirely from recycled plywood and timber and moulding is an amalgamation of layers and layers of timber. I then filled the grain with “tout prêt polyfilla”, primed and paint finished in old oak.
This was very precise carpentry, despite working with recycled wood, and I rose to the challenge of achieving good joinery; so much so that we did not have the heart to skip it and we used it for a while as a bar for ourselves.
Play synopsis: The bickering landlord and landlady welcome you and a host of locals to the bar. From sparkling comical characters to sparring couples and lovelorn singles. As stories unfold and memories are shared, the smiling faces of the hosts begin to crack exposing the tense and fractured relationship underneath. Created by Jim Cartwright. Expect belly laughs and tears alongside your pint and pork scratchings.
